But due to the economy and the changing of the times, the business could not keep up, and we finally went under. This was devastating to me, you don't know how much."
Dan's wife: "…And everything was going along smooth and all of a sudden the business just collapsed. And then on top of that, he had the stroke."
Dan's son: "…And at first, we just thought that his mood was a result of the stroke, but after a couple of months, I thought something was wrong, because he never did any of the things that he used to do…because, you know, he had this problem with his arm. And so I suggested to him to ask his doctor about his feeling of being 'down,' and she suggested that he see a psychiatrist."
Dan: "I was glad in the end that my family was there to make the suggestion for me to get help. The doctor obviously had many patients who had been in depression as the result of a stroke, so I was put on medication fairly quickly, and after a while, the medication started to help me."
"I knew that physically I was fighting a big battle, and I needed to find something positive that perhaps would help, and I figured I may as well try it, and thank goodness it really helped me, really helped bring me back."
"Working with the physical therapist who is putting me through some very great procedures and exercises, to help me recover the use of my arm, is definitely beneficial to help me to regain what I've lost. Along with the psychiatric care, the exercises are going hand in hand with (the) recovery, and I know that they both work together."
Dan's wife: "He took his medication, he began to do his exercises, therapy…I'm just so pleased and happy, because he is the man that I have known all my life, and I don't want anyone else, I just want him back."
Dan's son: "As you know, he's not fully recovered, he's still working very hard. You know…he built his business from (the) ground up, and he worked very hard at the business, and I know he'll work very hard at getting his life back together."
Dan: "If I came across someone who had a family that was going through a similar type problem, I would say to them, definitely, daily, stay in close communication with them. Keep monitoring them, keep talking to them, keep encouraging them, and try in whatever way possible to help them to get help, like my family did for me."
